Orton-Gillingham Level 1: Associate Level Coursework

The Orton-Gillingham Associate Level course provides participants with instruction in the basics of the Orton Gillingham approach. The Orton-Gillingham Approach is a systematic, multisensory and diagnostic-prescriptive approach to teaching the continuum of language skills including phonological awareness, decoding, spelling, morphology, and handwriting. The course includes instruction in identifying the characteristics and needs of the learner with dyslexia, outlining the principles of multisensory structured teaching, unpacking the structure of the English language, and designing and implementing lessons. O-G is highly effective for teaching students with dyslexia as well as other individuals who need explicit instruction in the basic skills of language. This course offers the first 42 hours of the 60-hour requirement of the Orton-Gillingham Academy for certification at the Associate Level. The instructor is a Fellow of the OGA.

Orton-Gillingham Level 1: Associate Level Practicum and Fieldwork

This option is ideal for all teachers but particularly those working in Tier 2 and Tier 3 positions. The Orton-Gillingham Associate level practicum provides teachers with the opportunity to apply the principles of O-G instruction to working 1:1 with a student at their own school site. The participant will design and teach 100 lessons under the supervision of an Orton-Gillingham Academy Fellow. This practicum experience requires a minimum commitment of 8 consecutive months, during which the participant will receive 10 formal observations from the Fellow. The participant also will attend three day-long remote Friday seminars during the school year and complete the required assigned readings. This additional training time will complete the 60 hours of required coursework. When the practicum hours, observations, seminars, and required readings are completed, participants will have met the requirements of the Orton-Gillingham Academy for certification at the Associate Level of membership. The instructors are Fellows of the OGA.
